How To Prepare Your Photos To Go Online

Tips For Putting Photos On Your Website

Q. I want to put photos on my web page. How big should they be? Are small pictures better than big ones?

Fast loading means smaller file sizes. Smaller file sizes. But higher resolution pictures are better for a website builder to work with than lower resolution pictures. Contradictory? You bet.

Because there is more "information" in them, higher resolution photos are better to work with when we are fixing colors, brightness and contrast, sharpness and cropping. Here's where it makes sense again: when we are finished adjusting and fixing all these things, then we reduce the file size. This is called "optimizing" the photo. (In terms of quantity, we start with a lot and try to end up with less; in terms of quality, it is the opposite.)

That's the long answer in case you want to understand how web pages are put together.

The short answer is that higher resolution photos are better than the lower resolution pictures (in the beginning).

Q. How do you get Google, Yahoo and other search engines to see my pictures so they can list them?

Start by making sure that all of your photos have "alt" tags. What? "Alt" tags are small bits of text that provide information about an image. They are most valuable to someone who needs to use a screen reader (a machine that actually reads the text out loud for users who are unable to see the screen). Without this small bit of identifying text, there would be no way of making sense of an image without seeing it. Search engines have the same need.
